Symptoms of Genital Warts?

In men, genital warts can be found in the penis, urethra, and rectal area. In women, the warts develop on the vaginal lips, inside the vagina, cervix, uterus, and around the anus. Symptoms of genital warts may appear from a few weeks to even several years so you should not wait for the physical presence of genital warts to manifest. Moreover, there are times when some symptoms of genital warts appear without the warts appearing and vice versa. Thus, you need a regular check-up in order to make sure that you don’t have the virus. You cannot substitute guesswork for a medical exam conducted by an expert.

The main causes of genital warts are the several sub-types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which is also known as “condylomata acuminat”. They are usually spread through sexual intercourse. Similar to other sexually transmitted diseases, HPV infection may not show any symptoms. But even if your partner’s HPV is in the incubation phase, meaning he/she does not have any genital warts, you may still get the infection.

Below is a list of the common symptoms of genital warts:

1. Red, pink or gray-colored cauliflower-shaped lesions in your genital and anal area that looks raised or flat. These bumps may grow in large clusters and expand into huge masses very rapidly.

2. An increase in moisture and dampness in the infected area.

3. An increase in vaginal fluid excretion.

4. Pain and bleeding during and after sexual intercourse. This is usually more painful for women since their genital warts can manifest inside their cervix and vagina.

5. Tiny papules on shaft of the penis.

6. Discomfort and itching in the affected areas. This is commonly confused for a simple rash.

7. A burning sensation in the genital and anal region. Warts are usually painless in nature in mild cases, but they may inflict extreme pain in severe cases.

If you think that you have the above symptoms of genital warts, you should immediately abstain from any sexual contact and visit your doctor. Early detection and treatment of genital warts is the best way of dealing with them in order to avoid further risks to your health. Similar to other health problems, the chances of success in treating genital warts are bigger when the disease is addressed during its early stages.

It is important to know that the treatment for genital warts will only relieve you of the symptoms and discomfort brought about by the virus. However, it will not eliminate HPV from your system since until now no cure for it has been found. Consult your doctor for a therapy plan that would suit you. He/she will advise you to undergo treatment based on your medical history and on the size and location of your genital warts.

You should not attempt to treat your genital warts on your own. Even simple topical medications have a proper way of application, which your doctor will advise you. Moreover, some remedies that can be administered at home contain harsh chemicals that may harm you if not applied properly and with precision.
